Here's a little demo of the Freehand Technique, One Handed Roll, Rim Roll or Gravity Blast as popularized by the awesome Johnny Rabb. I actually learned this technique while watching John Blackwell's "Technique, Grooving, And Showmanship" DVD.

It works by using the rim of the drum as the fulcrum point and allows you to get two notes for each movement by using an upstroke (playing a note whilst lifting your hand up). Hopefully you can see how it works from the video.

Its a cool trick to use in a solo but I get the most use out of it playing Drum n Bass as you can manipulate the sound of the drum with the left hand whilst playing fast stuff with the right.

Confession time: Wish I could do the technique this fast with my left hand though lol.
