I've always found 1 / 1 one of the hardest linear patterns to play fast and smooth without it turning into flams, especially when leading with the left hand. 1 / 1 means to play one note with the hands and one note with the foot in a continuous pattern (in other words, playing a roll between the hands and feet). I love the way drummers like Aaron Spears, dana hawkins etc use this pattern to almost devastating effect.
I'm not really a fan of double pedals so this is all done using a single bass drum pedal. Check out my video on bass drum technique to see the technique Im using.
I wrote this little exercise to help me make this pattern smoother and faster whilst developing both right and left hands. It starts with 4 notes on each hand, then 3 notes, then 2 and finally a paradiddle just for fun. The bass drum is playing one note in between each note I play with my hands.
The kit Im playing has sadly seen better days. Its the practice/teaching kit at work and its in dire need of some new skins. But hey, a bad workman blames his tools.
