Here's a clip of me playing a lick inspired by George "Spanky" McCurdy. Check him out if you have not already, he and Chris Dave have to be some of the most inventive drummers I've ever seen!
The hand pattern is based around the Five Stroke Roll. On the 5th note, I'm playing a hi hat choke. By repeating this phrase, I get an off beat shuffle pattern on the hi hats. Then I accent beats two and four on the snare. Finally, I'm trying to be inventive with the bass drum part, almost treating the hand pattern as an ostinato and attempting to improvise the bass drum part as much as possible.
I thought I would add an audio clip of my band - New Groove Formation playing our song "Love Is Funky" over the end credits.
The kit I'm playing has sadly seen better days. Its the practice/teaching kit at work and its in dire need of some new skins. The toms are particularly bad at the moment. But hey, a bad workman blames his tools.

@bert872 I'm pretty busy at the moment but I will be filming some pro stuff soon and I will make sure this lick is one of the things I cover :). Thanks for watching mate! (via YouTube)
any chance of a tutorial on this? thanks for the videos, really inspiring. (via YouTube)
Sadly this is not the same lick. Just my own interpretation of what Spanky did in that video. Wish I knew what on earth he was playing exactly as its possibly the most inventive thing I've heard on drums for a long time! A Five Stroke Roll is R R L L R or L L R R L Thanks for watching!
